Things I learned about Rain are...well it's wet.

-I also learned that leather boots are not waterproof, unless the leather is still on the cow. And the stitching does not act like a waterproof seal.

-No matter how high the heel on my boots are, my pants will always be too long, therefore ending up wet for approximately 2 inches above the hemline.

-The teeny, tiny umbrella I brought with me from California...doesn't work so much in "real" rain.

-"Real" rain happens way too often here and it has made me realize that flip-flops year round may not be entirely possible. They only make me look like a silly tourist.

-Also, a sweatshirt in said "real" rain isn't very functional in protecting you and your child from the wetness. But it will help dry the grocery cart that the tiny umbrella didn't keep dry.

-It is possible I may need to invest in rain gear. WTH is rain gear and where am I supposed to get it?! If it's considered seasonal-wear, then I am screwed since clothes for spring are already out. Okay, maybe not spring, but it's like buying for Christmas in July.

-The dog also needs to invest in his own rain gear. Preferably, rain boots. Cleaning mud from in between talon nails is really stating his case for being an outside dog. Although, if it ever stopped raining, we could have the backyard landscaped and mud would be something I put on my face at the spa.

-The one big thing I learned about the rain is...well that I'm just a spoiled Southern California girl who thought she would enjoy the change in seasons. The only good thing to come out of this is that when someone says "OMG, it's not like you're gonna melt!" I can reply in kind "Sugar melts in water!"

  3. Haha - I do a lot of walking on my toes in the rain, hoping to keep the backs of my jeans dry (I usually fail!). :)

  4. Yeah. Being a Cali girl is rough. We have no idea what "weather" is really like. I bought my first coat when I moved to the East. (and I'm so glad I moved back west)

    :)

  5. yes, i must agree that californians are spoiled with their awesome weather. and because you're from california and wear high heeled boots, you probably don't wanna know what rain gear looks like! ;)

  6. First, thanks for commenting on my blog! :)

Second, your post is making me nervous! LOL. I'm a southern California girl who plans to move to Missouri in the next year or so... I keep telling myself that I'm looking forward to seeing all four seasons. (And I'm actually a flip flops in winter sorta girl.) Ugh... I guess I'll be investing in winter gear next summer so I can be a little more preapred! :)

I am in Houston, so I know exactly what you are talking about.

  8. AW, hang in there. It takes awhile to adjust from California. When I made the move to Philadelphia from California I was seriously depressed the entire 9 years I was subjected to that town. Now I'm in Florida and its all good again.

I recently found these really great weather boots ... and they're cute too-- check out www.sorel.com They have weather resistant suede (maybe leather too? I dont know- mine are suede-ish)

  10. LOL I hate getting wet! And those wet pants are really uncomfortable when you take those boots off and they are on your feet/legs after you take your socks off because the boots didn't keep them dry. LOL Have a great day! Swinging through from SITS!

  15. See, I'm the dork that rolls up her pants to the top of her boots to save the cuffs from getting wet.

Now I see that you *have* made the move successfully, minus the whole climate change thing ;)

  17. Get yourself a can of Kiwi Outdoors Mink Oil, it conditions and waterproofs smooth leather. It works just like shoe polish, you spread it on, buff off the excess.

If you have suede or something fancy like snakeskin or ostrich boots then you should get some Kiwi Protect All. With the right treatment your boots will resist rain quite well, at least city rain where you aren't going knee deep in mud and water. For that you need waders. And a shotgun because hunting is the only reason to do that.

  19. I use the sugar melts line too - but I usually follow it with "and s*** gets slimy"!
It snowed up here overnight, so we got to deal with that and ice today... I think I would still rather have that than rain though!

  20. Oh the agony of rain. What's a girl to do. Time to go on J. Crew and order gortex jackets, rain boots and a GIANT umbrella. Giving up the flip flops will be tough though.

Hope your adjustment happens sooner rather than later. Change sucks.

  21. Nothing makes me more grumpy than getting rained on. NOTHING.

Plus, I too, have the jeans issue. I HATE walking around with the hem all soaking wet and COLD! GRRR

  25. I have learned that it's ok for a 43 year old chubby Mama of two to call on customers carrying an Incredible Hulk umbrella...what? I thought I looked pretty hot with it thankyouverymuch. :)

  26. I'm so not a rain girl either, it drives me crazy, and my pants are always way too long for any length of heal. Come to Boise, it's boring but hey, not a lot of rain!

  31. Rain is NOT fun. And I'd take year-round Cali weather if it weren't Cali. So I guess that means I should go to FL.
